About The Artist.
"The Tuth Will Set You Free". Those are words to live by. Who better to understand the validaty of such a statement, than one who lives and endure the reality and signifacance of such a precious statement. The word composure - (kempoZHure) by definition: the state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself. And that is the artist who goes by that name... COMPOSHURE.
THE BEGINING: In the year 1992 the artist who's name Is Erick, was charged, exonerated, then unjustly convicted for a crime in which he did not commit and was incarcerated to serve a term of 2 -10 years in prison. During this incarceration he was denied parole 9 times for refusing to admit to the crime that he did not commit. Some would say why not just say yes and be released? After all your freedom was on the line. While that may seem like a no brainer to most. For him it was about the principle of the Truth. Why lie on yourself just to appease the system. Needless to say that during this 10 year incarceration inmate 228147 was not a model prisoner. Recieving dozens of disciplinary infractions (tickets), placed in the Hole (solitary confinement) several times for negative conduct towards prison staff etc.
But also during this incarceration, there was the unfortunate oppourtunity to see the world from another lens. Different men from all walks of life and circumstances. Every religion and every race of men. Sons, brothers, uncles, fathers. He watched men given the chance go home, only to return. Seen men die before that chance to go home. Lived with men that will never see freedom again because of bad decisions. It's not a resort, its meant to be a place of discipline, rehabilitation and some deserve to be there. but you wouldnt wish it upon your worst enemy. Its easy to get caught up in the perils of prison and lose yoursef in the chaos and discord that is prison life. However. After spending 10 straight years in such a desolate place... He had survived.
2002 after 10 years of pain, heartache and despair, it was time to go home with a fresh chance at life. But the corruptness of the System had another trick up its sleeve. On the vey day of being released from prison and before he could even walk out a "free" man. He was handed a piece of paper letting me know tha he had a warrant for his arrest for failing to pay child support during the 10 years of incarceration and that he owed $121,000 in back arrears. Yes. One Hundred Twenty One Thousand dollars. The next level of this journey had begun.
Regardless the fact that he was charged the child support while locked up. Because of his inability to put a significant dent in the $121,000 in back child support, the powers that be had placed him in jail several times since 2002. Ultimately he was forced to take a plea of 2 more felonies for that unjust child support debt or go back to prison for an additional 5 year term. The irony is that he "under duress" plead guilty to the bogus charges of accumulating $121,000 worth of child support WHILE he was locked up in prison for 10 years. Unlike the first time wherehe was Not Guilty and refused to take even a misdemeanor charge. His hands were tied. This was 100% a no win scenario. Because although they knew he was In prison when all that money was accumulated, they saidhe still owed the money anyway?
Today in 2024 he is not incarcerated because of that plea. Because of that plea and in order to avoid another unjust incarceration he must pay and have continued to pay to this day, over $300 a month in child support to someone whom the youngest child that he shares together is a mother of 4 herself. Today in 2024 he is down to $35,000 of that $121,000 accumulated during 10 years of incarceration. The mother continues to except that free money. She has taken his tax returns etc., but thats another story for another day about how the System enables some women at the expense of others, irregardless of the overall effect it has on families.
MASS INCARCERATION is a real thing in the United States of America. So many men, women and children are forced to be a part of a corrupt system designed to fail you. We can go on for days about how being part of this systematic problem can have adverse effects on ones well being, but you get the picture.
That incarcerated journey began 32 years ago. If he could go back in time and change the outcome and not have to endure how it effects his life today? No. Because it will still start off with being Not Guilty of a crime that didn't exist. Yes. he is embarrassed of he circumstances surrounding being in that position in 1992. But he is not ashamed of something that he did not do. One thing that he learned about himself. He's strong, resilient, and forgiving. The powers that be have not broken his spirit, have not deminished his faith in the overall goodness of people. For throughout all the nonsense, the crap, the outright dirtiness of how the penal system can be. He has remained constant in who he is. He has remained calm and in control of oneself. He has kept his.. COMPOSHURE.
The music name describes him to a Tee. He has been a lover of music his whole life. He's made music and created music for so many people prior, even during, and after incarceration. But no more making music in the background. He has an obligation to be in the forefront and be heard, and more importantly bring light and attention thru music. Not only bring light to the epidemic of MASS INCARCERATION and how it destroys the lives of individulals and their families. But to also be a voice.
For while Composhure has been able to strive and flourish inspite of the challenges and difficulties in being technically a 3x convicted felon, there are others who can not. And he has an obligation to be their voice, not only thru music but also lead by example thru behavior as well. Because while he does not consider himself to be your conventional felon. He is a convicted felon just the same and part of the official statistics. And because of that he represent that side of society and all the stigma that comes along with it.
Compos)(ure. Spelled with an "H". The main H is for being Humbled by all the different things that life has thrown kis way without him losing his way. But it also represents every other H in a positive way. Even being technically labeled as an Habitual offender... He's good. COOL CALM and COLLECTED.
